Nightbringer - Ego Dominus Tuus
2014 / Black metal
Nightbringer has been playing sinister occultism themed
black metal for a long time and I have listened and enjoyed most of the stuff
they have put out so far. The band’s soundscape has always been quite
distinguishable with it taking some distance from the one of traditional black metal
and adding more emphasis on atmospheric components.
The band’s newest album, Ego Dominus Tuus, continues with
the same style and is instantly recognizable as Nightbringer. It’s clearly a
high quality album and it feels like they managed not only in keeping all the
essential elements from the previous releases but also moving the band’s sound
a notch into a new direction. Most of the tracks are really good and there is
plenty of variation in the songwriting and it’s obvious that much thought was
put into creating the album’s a haunting atmosphere.
The only flaw with the album I can come up with after the
first spin is that the tracks fail to come together, creating some phasing
issues and making the album not as enjoyable as possible to listen as a whole.
Nevertheless, it’s a solid album and is easily worth the listen if you like older
Nightbringer or happen to be looking for new experiences with non-traditional black
metal with atmospheric elements.
